Dune Climb Hike Description
The Dune Climb is the cherry on the sundae that is Sleeping Bear Dunes. There are three hiking trails of varying difficulty that take you directly up, over, and around the dunes. The 3.5 mile Dunes Trail is the biggest, baddest, and most rewarding, going over the dunes and out to Lake Michigan. There's also a 2.8-mile hike to Sleeping Bear Point and back that's slightly less difficult. Those wanting an easier walk or who want to bring a baby in a stroller can take the 1.8-mile Duneside Accessible Trail.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids will tear up the Dune Climb trail for a chance to play king of the sand mountain.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will enjoy the physical challenge of the Dune Climb hike and the waterfront view of Glen Lake at the end.
Planning Notes
- Wear sand-friendly shoes. The obvious fun in the Dune Climb is getting sand just about everywhere. Waterproof sandals are perfect for this environment.
- Hydrate. On hot, sunny days the dunes can feel like a frying pan; be sure to bring plenty of water no matter which hike you take.
- Services are available. The Visitor Center has public restrooms.
- Stay on designated trails. The dune environment is delicate and worth preserving, so only hike where permitted.
