Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Maritime Museum Description
Founded in 1901 as a Coast Guard rescue station, this museum is tucked away in the historic town of Glen Haven. It features items related to the U.S. Coast Guard and shipping on the Great Lakes, including a replica of a wheelhouse (where steamboat captains would steer their ships). It hosts several programs designed to draw kids in, such as a 3 p.m. daily rescue drill reenactment featuring Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and the firing of the Lyle Gun (which kids will recognize as a cannon).
Kid Tips
Babies: Because there are many places to explore on foot here, carrying baby in a sling or carrier is probably your best bet.
School-Age Kids: Kids will love the rescue demonstration and are often asked to join in, so verify the time it's starting and arrive beforehand.
Planning Notes
- Ample parking on site. There's a parking lot at the museum. Many of Glen Haven's restored building exhibits are close enough to explore on foot after visiting the museum.
- More to see. Driving through Glen Haven, you'll see an old cannery that's now a boat museum, a restored general store, and an old blacksmith shop, all of which are worth a stop.
