Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum Tour Description

Drive to the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula to tour the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum and get spectacular views of the water. Tours take place at one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes, designed to resemble a lighthouse keeper's home from the 1930s. Exhibits on the 75-minute tour include the Grand Traverse Light itself, which has guided ships since 1852; the findings from an archeological dig on the peninsula; and a display on the history of Great Lakes shipping.

Kid Tips

Babies: Bring a frontpack to allow for climbing stairs and walking outside on sandy ground.

School-Age Kids: Kids will love climbing the lighthouse tower and the foghorn demonstration, and may even get the chance to blow their own horn.

Planning Notes

  • Permits required. Because the museum is located within a Michigan state park, you'll have to pay for a parking permit to take the tour ($6 for Michigan residents, $8 for non-residents).
  • Dress for sand and water. Durable, water-friendly shoes are a must.
  • Bring windbreakers. It can be windy on the shoreline, so bring a light jacket just in case.
  • Prepare to climb stairs and walk on sand. Visitors climb to the top of the lighthouse tower and walk outside to view an archeological dig.
  • No restrooms at the museum. Leelanau State Park does have outhouses nearby, however.
  • Take a hike. There are opportunities to hike here, too, so plan on a stroll along the beach after your tour.
