Tall Ship Manitou Cruise on Grand Traverse Bay Description

Sail into the past on a two-hour cruise of Grand Traverse Bay aboard the Tall Ship Manitou, a replica of a 19th century ship. The emphasis here is on experiencing a bit of history, imagining what it may have been like sailing these waters in the 1850s. Passengers help hoist the main sail as the Manitou leaves Traverse City, but most of the trip is spent enjoying the slow pace a sailboat offers. Kids will love watching the crew raise and lower sails to change the ship's direction or feeling the cool spray of water from the bay.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Life vests are provided to little kids.

School-Age Kids: Kids will love interacting with crew members and can watch them hoisting the many sails aboard the Manitou.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids old enough for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise will appreciate the seriously old-school charm of the Manitou.

Planning Notes

  • Reservations recommended. Book your cruise up to 14 days in advance. Prepayment in full guarantees your spot; full refunds given if you cancel 24 hours before sailing or if the ship doesn't sail due to inclement weather. Spur-of-the-moment tickets are also an option; call for availability.
  • Dress in layers and bring sunscreen. It can get chilly, windy, and sunny out on the bay, so be prepared for temperature and weather changes.
  • Snacks available to buy on board. No coolers or outside food permitted.
  • Tip your crew. It's customary to tip crew members who assist you during your cruise.
  • A calm ride. The Manitou holds 62 passengers, and at 114 feet long, it's big enough to fend off sea sickness for most passengers.
  • Unplug. There are no video games, TVs, or elaborate displays here, and cell phone use is discouraged. After all, the Manitou herself is one big, interactive exhibit.
