Raven Hill Discovery Center Description

Located southeast of Petoskey, the eclectic Raven Hill Discovery Center is worth a drive. A hands-on science and nature museum, it invites visitors of all ages to touch, interact, create, and ask questions. Highlights include a reptile room where kids can hold a (friendly) python or pet a giant African turtle, a musical instrument center, and various physics exhibits with marbles and magnets. A one-room school house is outdoors, as is a "Beyond Jurassic Park" path where kids view replicas of paleo-plants and animals.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: School age kids will love Raven Hill, where they can ride a bike to run a generator, play old-fashioned mechanical games, or weave on a real loom.

Planning Notes

  • Dress for exploration. The Center contains both indoor and outdoor exhibits, so wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty while the kids explore.

What we loved:
Outdoor music garden.

What we didn't love:
Price, organization of displays, lots of things

On the up side, they had an interesting display of items that the kids could hit or pluck to make music. Very unique idea, and our boys 3 & 6 loved it.br/ On the down side, at $8 a person and a long drive from Petoskey, I was expecting much more to make it worth while. The displays in the main seemed to just be a jumble of stuff that people had donated becuase they could not think of anything better to do with it. Sort of reminded me of a garage sale without the price tags. There was an old school house, which they could have done a lot more with. A "tree house" had been built, but there was nothing in it, so it was just a run-through and on to the next thing for our boys. There were some trails on the grounds, but no explaining signage to give you a reason to walk it.br/ I think that they have a good idea, but the execution is laking. Read More
