Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Description

Lake Superior offers some of the most pristine beaches (and, let's face it, coldest water) available in the Midwest. Pictured Rocks National Shoreline, named for a stretch of colorful rocks that tower up to 200 feet above the water, offers a touch of drama to roughly 40 miles of shoreline. Stop by the visitors' center for a map to the trail that leads you to the Au Sable Lighthouse and Museum.

Kid Tips

Babies: Touring the shoreline by boat may give you an opportunity to take in some beautiful scenery while your baby naps. Visit www.picturedrocks.com for information on tour cruises.

School-Age Kids: This peaceful shoreline is all about quiet, low-key fun. Encourage your child to point out (and maybe photograph) the wildlife. You can also bring a picnic lunch to eat outside.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids may enjoy taking a guided kayak or canoe trip. Check out http://www.paddlingmichigan.com/ for information.

Planning Notes

  • Don't plan on swimming. Lake Superior's beaches are gorgeous and fun to walk along ... maybe even dip your toes in, but the water is often far too cold even for the hardiest swimmers.
