Mystery Spot Description
Decades ago, three surveyors discovered an area near St. Ignace, MI, that made them feel queasy and confounded their equipment ... or so the story goes. For kids who long to defy the laws of gravity, the Mystery Spot is kooky, kitschy fun. This shack -- in which water appears to pour upward and chairs seem to float in the air -- has been a tourist staple for decades. Sure, the "mystery" lies in an optical illusion, which some kids may figure out quickly ... but some kids (and kids at heart) leave the "how" to scientists and simply enjoy the mystery.
Kid Tips
Babies: There's not much fun here for babies or little kids, and you might not feel stable enough on your feet to hold a young child safely (your center of gravity is off-balance here).
School-Age Kids: This makes an unusual opportunity for a lesson in physics and gravity.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Some older kids will be mystified; others will spend their time trying to figure out the trick.
Planning Notes
- The Mystery Spot is a great stop on your way to the U.P. It's right off of I-75, soon after you cross over the Mackinac Bridge and about 3-4 hours from the major airports.
- Head outside. There's a maze in the woods, and a miniature golf course next door.
