Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum Description

Kids are intrigued by the ghostly and grisly details of shipwrecks, and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum brings them to life through its relics, artifacts, and the stories of rescuers and those crewmen who were lucky enough to survive. The museum is stationed on Whitefish Point, home to the oldest active lighthouse on Lake Superior and located along the 80-mile stretch of shoreline dubbed "Lake Superior's Shipwreck Coast." Learn about the Cyprus, a century-old shipwreck that made a sensation when it was discovered in Lake Superior in early 2007. You'll also learn more about the famous shipwreck Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank just 17 miles from Whitefish Point in 1975.

Kid Tips

Babies: The museum is stroller-friendly.

Toddlers & Pre-K: There's not that much in the way of hands-on activities to keep them entertained; you may want to skip this.

School-Age Kids: Listen to Gordon Lightfoot's song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" before your trip to help illustrate the story of that famous and relatively recent wreck.
