Soo Locks Train Tour Description

If you've got train enthusiasts in your family -- or just want an opportunity to put your feet up and rest for a while -- the Soo Locks Train Tour is a must. The train crosses the International Bridge into Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, offering breathtaking views of the Soo Locks and surrounding areas. The tour is narrated, so you'll walk away with a better sense of the waterway's history. While you wait for your train, pick out postcards and tourist trinkets at Mocs Du Locke.

Kid Tips

Babies: This could make a great opportunity for a nap.

Toddlers & Pre-K: There's not much to entertain little ones, but the train ride itself might be exciting enough to keep them occupied. But since you'll be crossing a bridge into another country, there won't be an opportunity to get off if your child gets scared.

Pre-Teens & Teens: While you wait for your train to depart, older kids might enjoy a tour of the moderately-frightening "Haunted Depot" at the train station.

Planning Notes

  • You'll need ID. U.S. citizens don't need passports to travel by train into Canada yet, but you will need to show a driver's license, and provide ID for your kids. If you're traveling with someone else's child you may need to show a letter giving you permission to bring them out of the country.
  • Dress appropriately. The "train" is really a glorified trolley -- think open-air seating -- so keep the weather in mind before you board.
  • Make a bathroom trip before you board. There are no bathrooms on the train.
