Fort Mackinac Description
Built by the British during the American Revolution, Fort Mackinac switched hands back and forth a few times as a result of several bloody battles in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. The fort-turned-museum now boasts 14 original buildings, interactive exhibits (kids love "firing" the cannon with the help of a costumed soldier friend), interpreters and a special children's area called the Kid's Quarters, where kids can -- among other things -- try out Morse code and practice their drill skills with a virtual sergeant.

Kid Tips
Babies: The fort is stroller-friendly, but dusty. Loud sounds from "firing" cannons and other fort activities might startle your baby.
Toddlers & Pre-K: The Kid's Quarters offers plenty of hands-on fun for this age, from playing a giant fife to touching a furry animal pelt.
School-Age Kids: Your child may be able to help "fire" a cannon with the help of a costumed "soldier" -- definitely a can't-miss opportunity.
Planning Notes
- Stay for lunch. The Fort Mackinac Tea Room, housed in the 1780 Officer's Stone Quarters, is the oldest public building in Michigan.

Reviews of Fort Mackinac
Fort Fun!
By ajburton823 August 22, 2008 | Daughter: Age 2 | Muncie, IN
What we loved:
fun, loud noises, and lots of information
What we didn't love:
loud noises, lots of walking
we had a lot of fun at the fort! They had great demonstrations going on at least every 1/2 hour and the different houses had interesting information for the adults as well. They have a 13 min. video that was quiet, dark and a great place for a quick nap. The cannon and gun fire are VERY loud and my be scary for little ones. My 10 mo. didn't mind but I did cover her ears as they recommended. Overall I think we had more fun here than she did!Read More
