Casa Kimberley Description
Now an upscale Bed & Breakfast hotel, Casa Kimberley was once the romantic home Richard Burton purchased for Elizabeth Taylor after he filmed Night of the Iguana in Puerto Vallarta in 1963. It has been lovingly restored and the lobby and public rooms feature photos and memorabilia documenting the glamorous life Taylor and Burton lived as expatriates in Puerto Vallarta. (There used to be a museum, but it was closed when I went there. There is disagreement about whether it will ever eopen.) You can't miss Casa Kimberley, because there is a pink passageway spanning the street; Burton and Taylor actually owned adjoining homes and the passageway connected them. The surrounding neighborhood, known as "Gringo Gulch," climbs the steep hills overlooking Banderas Bay and is where many of the earliest expatriates settled in Puerto Vallarta and built their fabulous getaways. It's worth a stroll for the beauty and cleanliness of the streets, the gorgeous gardens, a chance for some elebrity spotting, and incredible views of Banderas Bay below.
Kid Tips
Babies: The hills of "Gringo Gulch" aren't easily navigable for young children, so bring a stroller, backpack or snuggli if visiting with babies and toddlers.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Even seen from a boat, the dramatic rock formations of Los Arcos and the Federally protected marine park that surrounds them are worth visiting.
Planning Notes
- Bring walking shoes and come early or late in the day."Gringo Gulch," the area surrounding Casa Kimberley, is quite steep and hilly. Walk even a few blocks and you'll be going up and down some steep streets and staircases. So bring walking shoes and don't attempt this in the heat of midday.
- How to get there.Located above and behind the cathedral, Gringo Gulch is easiest to find from the center of town. From the upstream River Cuale Bridge, follow the stone pathway uphill (past the HSBC bank) or walk east along Calle Zaragoza, the street that runs along the main downtown plaza's south side. A series of steep staircases will bring you to the corner of Zaragoza and Miramar, the "gateway" to Gringo Gulch.
