The Whale Watching Center Description
Whale watching in Banderas Bay is, and should be, carefully regulated, because the whales who visit from December to March are there to give birth to their young and are quite vulnerable. The Whale Watching Center has the only U.S. Coast Guard-certified whale watching craft in Puerto Vallarta, and is well respected for treating the whales with respectful distance, and educating tourists about whales. Run by oceanologist Isabel Cardenas, the center has been certified by environmental and natural resources groups and has participated in research with the National Geographic Society.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Whale watching is as exciting for a 1-year-old as it is for a 15-year-old, though toddlers may be tricky to watch on a boat.
Planning Notes
- Rough waters can make kids seasick. The waters of Banderas Bay are typically calm, but can get rough under windy conditions. And kids get seasick more easily than adults. So bring dramamine with you if your child is seasick-prone. And if possible, plan your trip for early morning, when the sea tends to be calm.
- Timing of whale watching season changes each year. This year, the official Whale Watching Season is from December 8, 2009 - March 23, 2010.
