Playa de los Muertos and Olas Altas Description
Named for a famous battle between gold and silver miners and natives hungry to share their wealth, "Deadmen's Beach," as Playa de los Muertos translates, is probably the most popular beach for visitors in Puerto Vallarta. (Other than the one outside your hotel, of course!) Outfitters offer parasailing, jet skis, and other activities, and the long pier is great for spotting fish. Banana boat rides are offered from the pier as well. At sunset, a popular volleyball game sets up, and anyone's welcome to join.
Kid Tips
Babies: Sometimes the surf can get rough at Playa de los Muertos, making the swimming not the best for babies and toddlers.
Toddlers & Pre-K: All ages will like this beach, as there's so much to do.
School-Age Kids: Kids can have temporary "tattoos" and hair braiding done right on the beach if they wish.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The vendors who come to tout their wares can be annoying, but teens may actually appreciate the jewelry, sarongs, and other offerings. Jet skis, windsurfing, and other activities are available, and you can rent a palapa for shade.
Planning Notes
- Plan your trip to include lunch or dinner. Many top-notch restaurants, such as La Palapa, are located along the Playa de los Muertos boardwalk. They serve crab, fish, and other seafood fresh off the boat, so make lunch or dinner part of your excursion.
