Horseback Riding at Rancho Loma Bonita Description

A horse-eye-view of the jungle and the beach is a great way for kids to learn about the landscape. Of the many horseback riding tours and ranches in Cancun, Rancho Loma Bonita is one of the best. The ranch is well-manicured and the horses appear to be well cared for. Get picked up at the Kulkulcan Plaza Mall (for an extra charge) or meet directly at the ranch. The ride starts by going through the jungle, where you might get lucky and spot spider monkeys, wild parrots, or toucans. Then ride along the beach—guides will even let you take the saddle off your horse and ride in the water if you'd like! Unlike some trail riding horses, Rancho Loma Bonita's are energetic and will gallop for experienced riders. The ride includes drinks and a light lunch (usually chicken and beans and rice) at the ranch, where there's also a big swimming pool to cool off at the end of the day.

Kid Tips

Babies: This horseback ride is not for babies.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Preschoolers are allowed to ride with parents. Bring your own helmets, though, as the ranch won't have any small enough for tots' heads.

School-Age Kids: Five-year-olds and up may ride their own horse or go with a parent.

Pre-Teens & Teens: A gallop along the beach through the water will intrigue your teen.

Planning Notes

  • Meet at Kulkulcan Plaza Mall. A bus will pick you up at the mall and take you to Rancho Loma Bonita for an extra charge of $15.
  • Go early: "The heat in Cancun is so bad it'll make your teeth sweat," says one tour operator. Beat the heat by going on the earliest ride of the day.
  • Dress for sun. Wear a hat and sunscreen.
  • Bring a towel: There are showers at the ranch and if you want to shower afterwards bring your own towel.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes. No flip-flops for horseback riding.
  • Bring a bathing suit: The ranch has a nice, big pool so bring suits for the whole family.
