Dolphin Discovery at Isla Mujeres Description
There's something magical about these always-smiling highly intelligent marine mammals and Dolphin Discovery (which has four locations throughout Mexico) that lets you and your children get up close and personal to a dolphin while you also learn about their behavior and habitat. Depending on the adventure you choose (actually having the dolphin take you for a swim costs more), you will get to be in the water with a dolphin, pet it, and get kissed. (The perfect photo op; photos cost extra.) This is a highly choreographed activity (there's no spontaneous swimming despite what the ads might lead you to believe) but one the whole family will find fascinating and worthwhile.
Kid Tips
Babies: Wait until they're older to take them on this adventure.
Toddlers & Pre-K: The water is cold at first and the splashing from the swimming dolphin might scare sensitive toddlers. Consider waiting until they're older.
School-Age Kids: A must-do for any school-aged child who likes marine animals.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Splurge on the Dolphin Royal Swim or the Dolphin Swim Adventure so teens can spend the most time in the water with the dolphins. The Shark Encounter is another must-do for teens.
Planning Notes
- Don't bother with an underwater camera. You can't take cameras with you to swim with the dolphins but Dolphin Discovery has photographers on hand. They also make a DVD of your experience, available to view and purchase afterwards.
- Leave your perfume at home. Marine mammals are bothered by chemicals so don't wear any perfume or makeup. Use only biodegradable chemical-free sunscreen.
- Expect crowds. This is a popular activity for tourists from all over the world. Your wristband color will determine what time you swim with dolphins. If you decide to do an extra encounter (shark or sea lion), beat the crowds by having it be the first or last thing you do in the day.
