Crab Apple Whitewater Rafting Description
Oh-so-fun adventure trips down the Deerfield River operate rain or shine. And, why not? As the guide says gleefully, "You're going to get soaked anyway." Getting wet is half the fun—that, and (according to teens) watching mom and dad hang on for dear life. Rapids range from mild (class II and III out of V) to wild (class III and IV) and are guaranteed by the scheduled dam releases that control river flow. So grab a paddle, let go of the good hair day, and enjoy.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The youngest child accommodated is age 5, and only on the half-day float trip or "funyak" trip. The latter arms little ones with water guns, so watch out.
School-Age Kids: Children as young as age 8 can ride the full-day Fife Brook trip. Count on this age to love the fact that they get a paddle and have to use it just like their older siblings.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The up-tempo Monroe Bridge Section is for ages 15 and up. It's challenging, but a great ride.
Planning Notes
- Brrrr. Even on a hot summer day, 63-degree water is cold. Bring protective clothing or rent a wetsuit.
- Reserve ahead. Due to the dam release schedule, up-tempo trips are only on selected weekends. Many of these trips book months ahead.
- All inclusive. Full-day trips include about 4 hours of rafting, plus lunch. Half-day trips include a snack.
- Cover your feet. Footwear, whether old sneakers, water shoes, or athletic sandals (no flip flops) are a must.
- Super thrills. Families interested in even wilder runs should check out the Hudson River companies near Lake George. River currents there are natural and unpredictable, making them a bit more challenging.
