Who needs ocean surf when you've got crystal clear lake water to play in? Families love Lake Pontoosuc, a bustling place where pleasure boating is via motor, paddle, or foot. Take out a four-person pedal boat (be warned: it's harder than it looks), paddle a kayak, or turn the key in a pontoon boat and let the kids cannonball off the side in the lake center. Don't feel like working that hard? Rental owners pull kids (and grown-ups) around in inner tubes or on skis, either of which will leave the group refreshed.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The youngest of children will be gladly accommodated provided mom and dad are along for the ride.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Two words: jet skis. They're expensive ($110 an hour) but if they see them, they're going to want them. Kids under 18 must ride with an adult.
Planning Notes
- Off-peak boating. The lake can get very busy on weekends. Weekdays, on the other hand, net calm surf and easy rentals.
- Reserve your craft. Call the night before to ensure that your aquatic chariot is waiting.
