Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge Description
Half the fun of this nature excursion is getting there. You have to take a ferry from Edgartown to get to the island of Chappaquiddick. Then, open-air trucks that look like African safari vehicles scoot across the remote beach to the hard-to-reach Cape Poge lighthouse. Surrounded by miles of water and sand, it feels like the end of the planet. The view from the lighthouse itself, which kids happily ascend, is the perfect finishing touch.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Children under 4 will likely have a difficult time with the trip length -- from start to finish, the trip runs 90 minutes plus ferry time.
Planning Notes
- Try out a boat. The Trustees of Reservations, who run the trip, also offer kayak trips in the area.
- Take the ferry. Meet your guides by taking the "Chappy" (Chappaquiddick) ferry from Edgartown.
- Reserve early. Lighthouse trips are popular and limited to 12 people.
