Oak Bluffs to Edgartown Bike Trail Description

Ferry reservations for your car are harder to come by than a Yankees cap in Fenway Park. Biking makes for a glorious alternative, particularly since it also nets front-row seats for admiring the island's stellar scenery. Contrary to popular belief, there are hills -- particularly for those brave souls taking the 40-mile round trip "up island" to Aquinnah. Younger kids will prefer shorter, flatter routes, like the six-mile version between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, where you can stop to fish off the Memorial Dock before making the return trip home. The latter route has the additional advantage of myriad ice-cream stops to be enjoyed at the start or finish -- or both.

  • Bicycling

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Biking alongside traffic in Edgartown (even though it's only a small stretch) can be a little unnerving. Consider a tandem.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids this age love the independence of a Vineyard bike, a rare opportunity to get around without waiting for mom's car.

Planning Notes

  • Rent bikes ahead of time. If you're planning to rent bikes, make sure to reserve ahead. One good rental shop: Cutler Rentals (800-627-2763).
  • Get in your licks. Ice cream shops in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown include Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium (Circuit Ave., Oak Bluffs) and Mad Martha's Homemade Ice Cream (7 N. Water Street, Edgartown).
  • Take a breather. If you get tired along the way (particularly on that up-island route), take a seat on a Vineyard Transit Authority bus, all of which are equipped with bike racks.
