Aerial Ride
Katama Airfield Description
Talk about a bird's-eye view! Biplanes net you the entire avian experience, right down to the wind in your hair. The ultimate thrill ride, plane trips take two guests at a time for 15-minute tours of Chappaquiddick (longer tours also available). Passengers 4 and up strap into 1940s-era planes, and grin ear to ear as the pilot circles the island. Not exciting enough? For $65 more, add a thrilling barrel roll and hammer-head maneuver. You'll need a parachute and some perfunctory instruction in how to use it -- but owners assure you you won't really need it.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Rides are for children roughly ages 4 and up. Younger than that probably won't appreciate it.
School-Age Kids: By this age, many older kids like going up with a friend instead of a parent.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Ask about an aviation school, planned for summer '08.
Planning Notes
- Make reservations. This is particularly important during the summer.
- Take an extended flight. Longer trips include a 30-minute tour of towns and beaches and a one-hour tour of the island.
- Fly without the engine. Another alternative is offered by Glider Rides: (800) 762-7464.
