Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown Description

When you take your child out whale watching, you'll hold your breath hoping to see something, anything -- a fin, tale, even a spout of water will do. Imagine the magic when you see so much more: a humpback whale in all its massive glory. And while seeing whales gives children a rush of excitement and trepidation, your children will be spellbound if friendly dolphins are also spotted in a wake. It's an adrenaline-packed adventure your family will remember for a lifetime.

Kid Tips

Babies: This is one adventure to save for later.

School-Age Kids: Whale watches are just right for ages 6 and up.

Pre-Teens & Teens: A naturalist travels on your ship and gives a lesson about the types of whales that have been spotted off Cape Cod and other marine animals you might see along the way. The staff will also introduce marine creatures -- from zooplankton to jellyfish -- fished out of the ocean in large nets during your trip.

Planning Notes

  • Prices can change due to oil price increases. Book early to lock in your rate.
  • Parking can be a real hassle in Provincetown. Get there early so you don't miss your excursion trying to park your car. There are spaces at 133 Bradford Street; if those are full, look for parking on side streets.
  • Prepare for your watch. Log on to Dolphin Fleet's Website with your kids to get a sense of what they'll see on a whale watch. Dolphin Fleet keeps track of the whales spotted on their watches, naming them and taking photos. When the kids recognize Tulip, Ebony, or Sockeye, they'll feel really connected to the whole experience.
  • Cover up and fill up. Bring sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats for everyone. Water and snacks are a must.
  • Keep the queasies at bay. Talk to your pediatrician about seasick bands or the appropriateness of over-the-counter motion-sickness medications.

Just the Facts

Hours: During peak months watches sail at 8:30, 9, and 9:30 a.m.; and 12:30, 1, 1:30, 4:30, 5, and 5:30 p.m. Check the online schedule beforehand.

Fees: $10 - $20

What we loved:
Whales! Entertaining and educational. And a nice boat trip.

I go whale watching with the Dolphin Fleet every year. You are guaranteed to see a whale otherwise you get your money back. The boats have a naturalist that give a lecture on the way out to explain what you will be seeing. They also help identify the animals (whales have names) and explain the behaviors. Entertaining and educational.

The most common whale to see are humpback whales. The trip is generally a 45 minute ride out, an hour or so of whale watching and the ride back into town. Stay off the bow of the boat because that is MY spot! :) Just kidding - the very front point is the best location because one can see whales on both sides of the ship from there. If you are lucky you may have a whale swim directly below you.

Bring your camera! Many of your pictures will be of small black/white smudges in the water but you may get some great pics. And bring a jacket because it is often a bit cooler out on the water than on the beach.

Also, just enjoy being out on the water. Look for lobster pots, fishing boats, ocean birds and the endless discussion of which way is Boston!Read More
