Expedition Whydah Sea Lab and Learning Center Description
If the words "shipwreck," "piracy," and "sunken treasure" arouse a smile from your children, then Whydah Sea Lab and Learning Center is a must-visit in Provincetown. The Whydah -- once a slave ship commandeered by pirates -- wrecked off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717 and was discovered in 1984 by an underwater explorer. Today the wreck and its contents are still being dismantled and displayed at Whydah, including real pirate artifacts and the only known real pirate treasure in the world.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The gift shop is filled with loot for pirate wannabees. But none of the real treasure is for sale.
School-Age Kids: The museum is hands-on, and allows young visitors to touch some buried treasure, including eight large silver Spanish coins used as currency in the day.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Pirate artifacts will grip older kids, especially fans of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean." They'll learn how sea archeologists use x-ray technology to search for treasure among wrecks on the ocean floor.
Planning Notes
- Do this before the beach. Exploring all the pirate plunder first will make for fun make-believe games at the beach.
