Salt Pond Visitor Center Description

The Cape Cod National Seashore's main visitor center is entrenched in seashore history. Five short films daily give mini history lessons; at 20 minutes or less, they're long enough to capture young minds without boredom or the fidgets setting in. Just outside the visitor center are two popular nature trails: the 1.5-mile Nauset Marsh Trail loop and the Buttonbush Trail (a quarter-mile, multi-sensory pathway featuring a guide rope and text panels lettered in Braille). The Nauset Bike Trail is a short (mostly shady) spin that takes you to beautiful Coast Guard Beach, a great place to swim.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Little tykes love the trails, and there's a fun shell box for kids to explore. The visitor center itself won't hold much appeal.

School-Age Kids: This is the perfect field trip for older kids. They'll be fascinated by the cultural history offered at the museum and in particular the once-revolutionary Marconi transatlantic communications cable that connected Cape Cod to Europe in the days before cell towers.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Teens are fascinated by the displays on beach formation and geology.

Planning Notes

  • Check the schedule. Call ahead or check the online schedule for details about the movies and when they're showing.
  • Make your visit into a field trip. Log on to the center's Website and click on "for teachers" for a field trip guide and lesson plans that will make you sound like your family's own "Julie McCoy."
