Boston by Little Feet Description

Even the littlest feet will learn something from this hands-on, right-in-the-thick-of-things tour. Meet at the Sam Adams sculpture (he's got one foot forward, showing his brash attitude) in Quincy Market to spend a fun and informative hour learning about Boston history. The guide will point out architecture, tell stories about the King of England, take you to a cemetery, and let the kids ride on the donkey in front of old City Hall. Boston by Foot also has themed walking tours (like literary Boston and the Freedom Trail), which are perfect for teens with special interests.

Kid Tips

Babies: Strollers are fine on the tour but you'll be walking on crowded streets and competing for sidewalk space with other pedestrians.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Although the tour is designed with slightly older kids in mind and a lot of the history will be over a toddler's head, bring the littler ones along. They'll like touching the buildings and checking out the unicorn on the top of the Old State House.

School-Age Kids: The tour covers material taught in third and fifth grade in school, so it's perfect for school-aged kids.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Even though Little Feet is geared toward kids ages 6-12, one 14-year-old was so interested in the tour she wanted to do another.

Planning Notes

  • Stand near the guide. Quincy Market is very noisy and crowded. Sirens wail, traffic squeals. The closer you stay to the guide, the more you'll get out of the tour.
  • Dress in layers. Wear your walking shoes, and dress in layers. Boston's weather is unpredictable, and changes without warning.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early. The tour guides ask that you come early and you'll want to be early anyway, so you can meet the guide and get organized.
  • Don't go hungry. Feed the kids before the tour and bring a few discrete snacks. A hungry kid won't be interested in Boston history.
  • Bring your camera. There are too many photo ops to leave the camera behind.
  • Bring the grown-up. Although the tour is designed for kids, an accompanying adult is required.
