Boston Children's Museum Description

One of the best children's museums in the world, this a must-see if you're bringing little ones to Boston. There are three floors of unadulterated fun to be had by all. Just the elaborate climbing structure right at the entranceway can keep them entertained for hours. Don't miss walking through the Japanese House, the kid-to-kid theater performances, or the arts and crafts activities, which change daily. One 6-year-old girl remembered it as the thing she liked best about Boston. There's so much fun for kids at the museum that you might even consider going more than once.

Kid Tips

Babies: This is a good place, even for babies. There's a special area, called PlaySpace, designed for kids ages 0-3.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The construction exhibit (where toddlers dress up like construction workers and drive trucks) and the Common, where you can play chess with life-sized pieces and musical chairs, are especially good for this age group, but toddlers and preschoolers will like everything about this museum.

Pre-Teens & Teens: This is a children's museum, and some teens might find it "babyish," but exhibits like the Japanese House, the Art Studio, and the Recycle Shop will intrigue pre-teens and teens.

Planning Notes

  • Fridays are (almost) free. The museum stays open until 9 p.m. on Friday and admission only costs a dollar. But be warned: it gets crowded.
  • Bring food. There's an Au Bon Pain in the museum on the ground floor but the selection isn't very extensive. Bring food and eat it at the first floor lunch room so that your kids can better enjoy their play.
  • Go when it opens. The museum is crowded even on weekdays during the school year. Although the museum is big enough to accommodate large numbers of kids, if you want to beat the crowds, go when it opens.
