Museum of Science Description

This museum of science is rivaled only by the Exploratorium in San Francisco. It's really an amazing place, with a gazillion interactive exhibits, live animal shows, live science demonstrations, and more. The best part is that you'll be as intrigued as your kids, as there is so much here for everyone. Don't miss the electricity show featuring 15-foot lightning bolts (but prepare your kids beforehand so they won't be frightened). The Butterfly Garden and planetarium shows are cool, too.

Kid Tips

Babies: There are no special exhibits for babies. Go to the Children's Museum instead.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The museum is fine for strollers but it gets crowded and your toddler will want to touch everything, so consider leaving the stroller behind. Toddlers will especially love the (free) live animal presentations, so try to time your visit accordingly.

School-Age Kids: Your school-aged kid will be in heaven for hours at this museum. Consider skipping the 3-D movie, laser, and planetarium shows if yours is the sensitive type.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Planetarium shows about Star Wars and IMAX films, as well as the regular exhibits in the museum, go over well with this crowd.

Planning Notes

  • Buy tickets online. This is a Boston hot spot and it gets crowded. There's nothing like bypassing the line and picking up tickets waiting for you at the ticket kiosk. You can buy tickets online.
  • Combine with a Duck Tour. If your kids are older and they're up for it, you can take a Duck Tour that starts at the Museum of Science. Do that first so you'll have plenty of time to explore the museum afterward.
  • Take the T. The museum is 200 yards away from the Green Line's Lechmere T stop. Then you don't have to futz with parking.
  • Check out their website. Their excellent website will help you plan your visit, especially if your time is limited.
