Penobscot Mountain Trail Description
Ascend the long, granite ridge of 1,194-foot Penobscot Mountain and you may feel as if you're on top of the world. One of many trails that leave from the Jordan Pond House hub, the Penobscot Mountain Trail has varied terrain and nearly continuous views of the sea and other peaks. Kids get a kick out of the woodsy section, which includes handrails, plank bridges, and a bit of scrambling but quickly eases into a smoother trail that climbs gradually over open ledge. Take your pick of return trails after a picnic on the summit, but steer clear of the Jordan Cliffs, which are not for the small or faint of heart.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: This is not an activity for the little ones. Negotiating the handrail/bridge section is dicey with a backpack carrier, and it's a long haul for short legs.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will like the challenge of this climb, the fifth highest on MDI. Adventurous types might go for a double-summit, adding Sargeant Mountain, too.
Planning Notes
- Know where you're going. Pick up a trail map at the Jordan Pond House gift shop.
- Picnic on the summit. If time allows, reward your hikers with tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House restaurant (call ahead for reservations).
- Proper clothing is a must. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring warm layers, even in summer -- it's typically windy and cooler on top.
Just the Facts
Hours: Sun-up to sun-down.

Reviews of Penobscot Mountain Trail
toddler hikes can be fun!

What we loved:
Nature like we'd never seen it before
What we didn't love:
Best to wear pants so your legs don't get scratched
My 2 year old was not all that coordinated or tough at this age but we had a very easy time hiking here. Tons of great picture opportunities and lovely nature all around us. Bring a sweater as the weather can be unpredictable -- cool winds can easily dampen kids' spirits.Read More
