Schoodic Peninsula Description

Schoodic Peninsula is a miniature version of MDI (Mount Desert Island) with a scenic, one-way, 12-mile drive and great hiking without the crowds. The ferry ride across Frenchman's Bay is a treat -- a chance to see lighthouses, lobstermen hauling traps, and porpoises up close -- and it's much faster than driving to the peninsula. Island Explorer bus service from the ferry dock in Winter Harbor to Schoodic makes transportation simple. Don't miss the surf at Schoodic Point; it's especially spectacular on windy days and stormy weather. The short hike up to Schoodic Head pays off with big-time views.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Although they'll adore the ferry ride, the numerous changes of transportation can exhaust little ones, and you're a long way from home base in the event of a meltdown.

School-Age Kids: Don't miss Little Moose Island, near Schoodic Head and accessible at low tide. Kids will love to explore the cliffs and ramble on the rocks, and knowing that the land bridge goes underwater when the tide comes in makes the visit extra thrilling.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Bring or rent bikes for older kids. They'll enjoy the freedom of touring at their own pace, and can always take a break and hop on the Island Explorer if they get tired.

Planning Notes

  • Getting around. The ferry to Winter Harbor leaves from the Bar Harbor Inn pier. Bikes are welcome (for a small fee). Call about early and late runs at a discount rate.
  • Pack a lunch. There's nothing to eat on the ferry, so pack your own food or buy sandwiches, baked goods, and treats at J. M. Gerrish Provisions (352 Main St., Winter Harbor, 207-963-2727), about a half-mile from the ferry dock.
  • Dress warmly. Wear comfortable shoes, a sweater or sweatshirt, and expect cool, windy weather -- even in summer.
  • Important numbers. Bar Harbor Ferry 207-288-2984, 207-288-4585, or 207-288-2373; Island Explorer Bus 207-667-5796.
