Diver Ed's Dive-In Theater Description

Getting a seal's-eye view of the coast adds a whole new dimension to a Maine visit. After chugging to a sweet spot on Frenchman's Bay, Ed suits up, dives into the deep (with a push from the kids) with his video camera and audio hookup, and gives play-by-play that's half-comedy, half-marine education as he seeks lobster, crab, sea stars, sea cucumbers, urchins, and more. You watch the catch via TV monitor, then touch and hold the creatures yourself when Ed clambers back onboard. Kids adore his antics, from overfilling his dive suit so he looks like the Michelin Man to pretending a passing schooner is a pirate ship.

Kid Tips

Babies: This tour is appropriate only for babies who will be content to be held for two hours. There's no room for crawling.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young toddlers might get antsy and feel cramped; kids 4 and up love the ride and the creatures.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will find this tour geared for and largely taken by younger kids, but they'll have fun, too, even if they don't admit it.

Planning Notes

  • Call ahead. Reservations required.
  • Dress warmly. Bring a wind jacket and/or fleece; it's always colder out on the water than it is on land.
  • Sunshine, smunshine. The show goes on in the fog.
  • How to get around. Park on campus or take the Island Explorer bus, then meet at George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History on the college campus.
