Oak Alley Plantation Description
Kids don't have to plow through "Gone With the Wind" to get a feeling for life in the antebellum South; they can visit one of Louisiana's historic plantations instead. Most spectacular is probably Oak Alley, a massive Greek Revival home with -- you guessed it -- an alley of towering oaks about 25 miles east of New Orleans. Guides in historic costumes lead tours of the house and extensive grounds and gardens, or you can pick up a map and wander at will.
Kid Tips
Babies: It's stroller-friendly, and little ones are very welcome, but the quiet atmosphere of a group tour might be stressful with a loud or fussy baby.
School-Age Kids: The hoop-skirted guides and golf cart rides will be popular features.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Those who've seen "Interview with the Vampire" and "Primary Colors" will appreciate that scenes were shot here.
Planning Notes
- Grab a bite. A restaurant on the grounds serves traditional Louisiana dishes, including desserts such as pecan pie, buttermilk pie, and bread pudding with whiskey sauce. The delicious mint juleps will mellow you right out when the kids' noise volume gets to be too much.
