Preservation Hall Description
For jazz lovers and those who appreciate music of all kinds, there's no pilgrimage quite like sitting on the venerable wooden benches of Preservation Hall, listening to the same jazz your parents or grandparents or great-grandparents might have heard when they visited. The building itself is impressive, located in the French Quarter and built in 1750. Once a tavern, an inn, photo studio, and art gallery, it reopened as a concert hall (albeit a small one) in 1961, when it was created specifically to celebrate a love of New Orleans jazz.
Kid Tips
Babies: No alcohol is served, making this music venue extremely family-friendly.
School-Age Kids: The perfect way to get kids primed to play an instrument.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If they play in their school jazz band, this will give them a new appreciation for the music they practice every night.
Planning Notes
- Bring plenty of cash. Credit cards are not accepted.
- Get there early for the 8 p.m. show. Kids will enjoy the 45-minute sets much more if they can sit close enough to see the players.
- Stop by the gift store. It's a little hokey, but worthwhile if you just can't imagine leaving without an iconic T-shirt.
