Audubon Aquarium of the Americas Description
Spots, the rare albino alligator, may be the most famous of all the creatures at this state-of-the-art aquarium, but the prize for most amusing goes to sea otters Buck and Emma. Right behind them are the accident-prone penguins, famously evacuated to Monterey Aquarium during Hurricane Katrina and only returned in 2006. Younger kids will have a hard time tearing themselves away from Adventure Island, where they can touch -- and maybe even feed -- the stingrays and other cool critters.
Kid Tips
Babies: Strollers and wagons are not available for rent, so bring your travel stroller, frontpack or backpack.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Don't miss the hands-on exhibits in which kids can handle the wildlife.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Skip the interactive exhibits and focus on the antics of the otters and penguins. Feedings will give plenty of photo ops.
Planning Notes
- Food requires thought. The only food options at the aquarium are Burger King and Papa John's Pizza, so plan accordingly.
- Chill out. The aquarium is air-conditioned, so it's the perfect way to pass a hot afternoon.
- Visit during feeding times. There are daily penguin feedings at 10:30 am and 3 p.m. daily; sea otter feedings at 2 p.m. daily; and stingray feedings at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m daily. Kids can feed the stingrays, but first you have to buy $2 feeding tokens at the Treasure Chest gift shop in front of Adventure Island.
