New Orleans City Park Description

The 1300-acre park in the heart of New Orleans suffered extensive hurricane damage, but has made an amazing recovery thanks to the efforts of motivated volunteers. The antique carousel at the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park is still closed for renovations, but all other rides, including two miniature trains, bumper cars, and a ladybug roller coaster, are open again. Storyland, a quaint and colorful theme park with exhibits illustrating popular fairy tales and nursery rhymes like Jack and the Beanstock, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan, is also open and is a huge hit with toddlers and younger kids. There's also a playground and a duck pond.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Don't miss the duck pond, which little ones may enjoy as much as the fancy attractions.

School-Age Kids: Storyland opens at 10 and closes at 5, so you can visit it before touring the rest of the park.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Too hokey for teens, unless they delight in being kids again for a few hours.

Planning Notes

  • Come after 3 p.m. and bring lots of drinks. This is a big park, and kids will get exhausted in the midday heat during the spring and summer.
  • First things first. Storyland closes at 5 p.m., so don't leave it till last.

Just the Facts
