Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill Description
The pastoral scenery at Shaker Village is just the start. The largest restored Shaker community in the U.S. features historic buildings, a grand dining room with traditional food, craft, and lifestyle demonstrations, and accommodations in the restored and replica buildings. The portrayal of this simple life is surprisingly entrancing for kids, especially those school-aged through the pre-teen years. More than 20 hiking and biking trails cover 40 miles, while horseback riding (bring your own—no horses are available to ride on site, although stabling is), canoeing, and fishing (again, BYO) are also available.
Kid Tips
Babies: While every effort has been made to accommodate wheelchairs, this is not a stroller-friendly environment. Bring baby in a carrier.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Splurge on the wagon and riverboat rides, and be prepared to drop some cash on handmade toys at the gift shop.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Imagine the ghost stories one can tell when spending the night in the simply furnished rooms of the historic and replica homes—no cell service, no phone service, almost no noise on the massive grounds of the village . . . BOO! It's a treat to overnight at the Inn for young adults.
Planning Notes
- A funky space. Seasonal notes. Guided tours are part of the admission fee from April through the end of October; the remainder of the year, self-guided tours are available. Fees are adjusted accordingly, with off-season rates at a very reasonable $2.50 to $7 per person, while in-season rates are $5-$14. Wagon rides are an additional $5; the riverboat, which runs from June to November, is $6 extra.
- Worth the drive. Shaker Village is located about 45 minutes from Lexington.
- Enjoy the excellent dining hall. It features generous servings of basic but finely prepared meals that include village-grown vegetables, roasted meats, and simple desserts. Reservations for the Trustees' Office Dining Room and the Winter Kitchen (the "formal" dining room and the sunny and more casual dining room) are necessary.
- Limited snacks and drinks for purchase. If you elect not to eat in the dining hall, a few vending machines offer basic snacks and drinks.
