Explorium of Lexington Description

One of the oldest children's museums in the United States, there are few high-tech bells and whistles at the Explorium. Instead, kids find a world of touch-and-feel, build-and-destroy, imagine-and-dream kind of play areas, from a fantastic, horse-inspired play space (a 10-year-old girl excitedly donned boots, jockey silks, and a cap, got a leg up onto a racehorse statue, and rode the race of her dreams) to a room dedicated to blowing and making of bubbles and art rooms filled with recycled items to create repurposed objects.

  • Science & Nature Museum

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: A special touch-and-feel space on the first floor is designed especially for the 7-and-under crowd.

School-Age Kids: Kids from kindergarten to third grade will get the most out of a visit; everything is meant to be touched, taken apart, put back together, and examined.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids who are really into arts and crafts will find plenty to keep them occupied. Other than that area, there's little to hold their interest.

Planning Notes

    • A funky space. The Explorium is housed in and on a few floors of retail space, but it can be tricky to navigate, especially with kids in strollers. Leave the stroller behind if possible.
