Aviation Museum of Kentucky Description
Explore Kentucky's connection to flight and view dozens of planes, helicopters, engines, and memoriabilia from decades of aviation history. An awesome, hand-built replica of Kentucky's claim to aviation fame—the 1908 Matthew Sellers quadraplane—hangs in the museum; while it came a few years after the Wright Brothers took off, the Sellers plane was the first with retractable landing gear. The docents are all avid enthusiasts, many retired military or civilian pilots, and will gladly share their extensive knowledge—and probably a war story or two—with visitors.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: There's not much here to engage toddlers. Skip it unless parents are avid aviation fans and toddlers are content to look and not touch.
School-Age Kids: Kids of all ages (and undoubtedly some parents) will jump at the chance to sit in the cockpit of a Vietnam-era Cobra gunship or one of the other planes. Check with the docents to see which planes are accessible.
Planning Notes
- Take your pick. Choose from a guided or self-guided tour of the inside exhibits. A docent must accompany visitors out onto the tarmac as the museum is on the grounds of the Lexington Blue Grass Airport.
