Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory Description

When young Bud Hillerich worked as an apprentice in his father's wood turning shop, he spent some time fashioning bats for himself and his teammates when Dad wasn't looking. Little did Bud know his bats would become the world standard for players from Little League to the MBA. Today Louisville Slugger powers the hitting of everyone from the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez to Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals. Tours of the factory are noisy and fun; baseball lovers will delight in the chance to spy their favorite stars' bats being made right in front of their eyes.

Kid Tips

Babies: Children of all ages are welcome on the factory tour, and the entire building is stroller-friendly. Expect plenty of noise and dust from the drilling and sanding of the bats; if you've got a noise-sensitive little one, just tour the museum.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Toddlers will love the sound tubes just outside the nature center; they're an active listening "game" to identify the sounds of nature. A visit of any length to the Busy as a Bee exhibit in the nature center may be too short.

School-Age Kids: The formation from a big cylinder of wood into a bat is fascinating—it takes about 30 seconds for a retail or Little League bat to be formed. Be sure to block out some viewing space for younger children—they'll be transfixed.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Head for the batting cages to try out a Slugger.

Planning Notes

    • Days of rest. There's no bat production on holidays or Sundays, which is the best part of the visit, so plan accordingly.
    • Little sluggers. At the conclusion of the factory tour, everyone gets a small Slugge r— an economical way to make sure everyone gets a souvenir to take back home.
    • Personalize it. For serious sluggers, a personalized bat ($18-$87) is a must; depending on the crowd at the museum, production can take from 20 minutes to a few hours.
