Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site Description
The Lincoln Memorial has two locations: The park headquarters, with the memorial and symbolic birth cabin (built on the same spot as the original Lincoln cabin, but about 25 years after Lincoln was born), and Lincoln's boyhood home at nearby Knob Creek, where the family moved following a land dispute. The serenity of the original homestead, including the spring where the family gathered its water, is indeed evidence of the sixteenth president's very humble beginnings, and a must-stop for every family because of its signifigance in American history. The ranger program is a fun way, through puzzles and seek-and-find activities, for kids to learn about Abraham Lincoln.
Kid Tips
Babies: It's a long climb up the 56 steps (one for each year Lincoln lived) to the memorial and cabin; leave the stroller behind.
School-Age Kids: Ask for a Junior Ranger book—if kids complete the activities, they receive a certificate and badge (hint: pay close attention to the exhibit signs inside landmark headquarters, as a lot of the answers are there).
Planning Notes
- Take a stroll. Easy, leg-stretching hikes are marked at each location. A 10-year old remarked how difficult it must have been to be from so remote an area to get all the way to Washington, D.C.
