Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop and Prehistoric Life Museum Description
Part rock shop, part museum, Dave's is a must-see for junior geologists and budding paleontologists. Enter the busy shop and take an immediate left turn down into the basement to explore the fascinating fossil collection that ranges from Cambrian era trilobites to the Pleistocene skeleton of a cave bear with all manner of fossilized flora and fauna in between. There are some inexpensive fossilized fish and more pricey dino remains for sale in the shop, but its chief appeal is the wide range of glittering and colorful rocks sourced from around the world, as well as plastic dinosaurs for sale. Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: The fossils alone, which include the remains of a tiny early horse and dog, are fascinating, but signage is slightly academic. Parents should expect to abridge the written information orally to make the visit most enlightening.
Planning Notes
- Mind the merchandise: Glass cases in the shop protect the most valuable items from breaking, but be aware that some of the glittering crystals beg to be touched and are reachable by young hands.
- Base yourselves below: The museum is the main wow for kids.
