Grosse Point Lighthouse and Lakefront Description
The 1873-built beacon on Grosse Point -- French for "Great Point" -- serves as a giant garden ornament for the parkland surrounding it. In summer the historic keeper's house is open for tours that illuminate 19th century life and allow you to climb 141 steps to the top of the lighthouse for panormaic Lake Michigan views. But it's the grounds that charm year-round, and include public trails for gentle hikes through wildflower paths and lakeside dunes. The lighthouse offers access to the beach where the shallow water is family-friendly, and neighboring Lawson Park hosts a well-equipped children's playground. Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Only children age 8 and up are allowed on the museum tour due to fire code, but younger ones won't be disappointed; the real focus here is the outdoor surroundings.
Planning Notes
- Think beach: Behind the lighthouse, the wildflower-borered trail leads to lakefront dune trails and the shore itself; pack accordingly.
- Go off season: Even though the popular beach is summer-only (and staffed with lifeguards then) the trails are fun in every season, including the snowy one.
- Tour prep: If you're planning on taking the lighthouse tour arrive early and expect to pay $6 for adults, $3 for children 8-12.
