Millennium Park Description

One of Chicago's newest attractions, Millennium Park (opened in 2004) is a fantastic place to spend a sunny afternoon. The park offers free entertainment and events such as dance, theatre, live music, storytellers, and even exercise classes. You can enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn or eat at one of the restaurants, then stroll through the Luthrie Garden, go ice skating (November through March) or simply admire the sculptures and city skyline in the background.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Since most of the concerts are meant to be open to children -- and there's plenty of wiggle-room in this huge park -- Millennium Park is a great choice for your child's first exposure to classical music, live theatre, or dance.

School-Age Kids: They'll love taking pictures in front of the park's imposing sculptures, particularly Cloud Gate, also known as "the bean" -- an enormous steel structure that reflects the city's skyline; as well as the Crown Fountain, which project enormous images of Chicago residents behind a flow of running water.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Stop in the Visitor Center to download a podcast park tour that your child can listen to on an iPod or MP3 player.

Planning Notes

  • Just FYI: If it rains, you will get wet. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, where much of the summer entertainment is held, has an open-air design -- no roof or enclosed seating area.
