Art Institute of Chicago Description

If you think an art museum sounds like it would be too stuffy for kids, think again. Yes, the Art Institute of Chicago houses one of the most impressive collections of art in the world, but it's also filled with exhibits that will excite and fascinate kids, from collections of masks, spears, and suits of armor, to a miniature recreation of homes from the 13th century until modern times. The Kraft Education Center offers hands-on, kid-friendly activities like games, puzzles and changing exhibits. The lower-level women's restroom has a nursing area.

Kid Tips

Babies: Parents with strollers should enter at the Michigan Avenue entrance. There are a limited number of free strollers available in the lobby, so if you're going on a weekend or holiday, be sure to bring your own.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Keep a close eye on your kids, and talk to them ahead of time about keeping their hands to themselves -- even with objects that don't look like art. For instance, you may pass something that looks an awful lot like a bench or footrest … trust us, it isn't.

School-Age Kids: Don't spend your whole visit in the Kraft Education Center. Kids will also love the Thorne Miniature Rooms and the Arms and Armor collection.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Those interested in art or history will get a thrill from standing before some of the world's most treasured works, such as Monet's "Water Lilies," Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," and Seurat's "Sunday on La Grande Jatte."
