John Hancock Building Hancock Observatory Description

No visit to Chicago is complete without a bird's eye view of the city. The Hancock Building may not have the honor of being the tallest building in Chicago, but it's less crowded than the Sears Tower, the views are comparable, and it costs a little less. The observatory features an open-air SkyWalk -- the only one like it in Chicago -- and interactive features, such as the SoundScope and History Wall. Be prepared to be wowed: On a clear day, you can see up to 80 miles covering four states.

Kid Tips

Babies: On the way up, it's likely that your baby's ears will pop. Make sure to bring a pacifier, which may help alleviate the discomfort. Have little kids chew on gum.

Toddlers & Pre-K: If your little ones are afraid of heights, you'll definitely want to skip this.

School-Age Kids: Kids this age will enjoy taking advantage of the fun photo ops throughout the observatory, where they can pose as a construction worker or skyscraper window washer.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll love the bragging rights that come with ascending 1,000 feet into the sky.

Planning Notes

  • Cut the line. Buy tickets online and you can skip the line for the cashier.
  • Good news for those squeamish about heights. Though there is an open-air viewing deck available, you don't have to go out on it. You can also see spectacular views from behind a window.
