Nordic Skiing at the Sun Valley Club Description

Rosy cheeks abound on Sun Valley's cross-country trails, where kids can ski in their own half-size tracks right next to the adults, practice on smooth or gently hilly terrain, or take lessons in a camp-like setting. The 40 kilometers of trails are meticulously groomed for classic and skate skiing, and range from easy two-way trails on a flat golf course to forested rolling hills. Hungry families will find a full-service restaurant and lounge in the spectacular new lodge, plus equipment rentals, lockers, and a waxing room.

Kid Tips

Babies: Babies and toddlers will be comfy and cozy in a "kindersled," which you can rent from the Nordic Center. It's enclosed and protected from the elements, but you may want to bring a little blanket to tuck around their legs.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Tiny skiers will do well if you rent a "pull-along," which attaches like a harness and lets a skiing grown-up pull them.

School-Age Kids: Kids ages 7-11 years old will have a blast in the Nordic Ski Camp, held every Saturday during ski season from 9 a.m.-Noon. Fees include rentals, lessons, and lunch.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Cell phone service is fairly reliable on the mountain, but you may want to give teens walkie-talkies, or at least arrange a meeting point, then let them go off on their own.

Planning Notes

  • Prepare for altitude. At about 6,000 feet above sea level, flat-landers may find themselves a little winded on these trails. Bring water and take breaks!
  • Check the Web site for discounts. Nordic ski packages sometimes include lodging deals for families with kids.
  • Consider a day trip. Galena Lodge, about 30 minutes away, has even longer trails plus kids' play areas. Moonlight ski tours are also available, with four-course dinners served in the lodge.
  • Strap on some snowshoes. Snowshoes are available to rent for kids and adults who want to explore eight kilometers of groomed and ungroomed trails.
