Skiing at Schweitzer Mountain Resort Description

An hour's drive from downtown Coeur d'Alene, Schweitzer Mountain was named by the locals for the hermit who used to live on this hill back in the mid 1900s. Summer activities range from mountain biking and chair lift rides (up to the hiking and bike trails) to picking fresh huckleberries and engaging in the simple fun of yard games. When it's ski season, Schweitzer is known for its open bowl skiing, with 92 trails; there are two terrain parks, an extensive cross-country ski trail syatem; and night skiing during select weeks.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Picking huckleberries is exciting and tasty — and any age can play along. Check in with the activity center for directions to the best picking spots and instructions on how to pick.

School-Age Kids: The excellent mountain activity center — located rigt in the village — offers a variety of programs, games and projects for children throughout both the summer and winter seasons, including crafts, games, equipment check-out and even video and book check-out.

Pre-Teens & Teens: A climbing wall and bungee/trampoline are a sure way to get the motor running for pre-teens and teens.

Planning Notes

  • Make a day of it. The charming town of Sandpoint is on the route to Schweitzer, and offers a pleasant way to while away a few hours on either side of a trip up the mountain.
  • Curves ahead. The mountain road will test drivers, especially in the winter, with its sharp curves and narrow width. Consider staying overnight during ski season.

Just the Facts

Hours: The mountain is open seasonally, from Thanksgiving through early April for winter and mid-June through Labor Day.

Fees: More than $40.

Recommended Time: Half day
