Manoa Falls Description

Just 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, a tropical rainforest awaits you. If you're a hiking family, you'll appreciate the chance to walk through bamboo groves and under the canopy of lush vegetation. Listen for the birds and breathe deeply to smell the luscious island flowers as you walk. You may even be lucky enough to find a ripe guava along the way. At the end of the 3/4-mile long trail, Manoa Falls cascades 150 feet down a vertical face into a crystal clear pool, giving you a glimpse of hidden Hawaii.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Kids this age will be in awe of the tropical rainforest that surrounds them.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Budding photographers will find many photo opportunities along the way. A small plant identification book would be a fun addition for those interested in the local flora -- see if they can spot "awapuhi," an ingredient often used in name brand shampoos.

Planning Notes

  • Bring bug spray. And consider wearing long pants. Mosquitoes abound in this moist forest.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. This hike is easy enough for older kids, but it is over rough ground, which can get very slippery in the event of rain.
  • Don't swim. It's beautiful to see, and very tempting after a long hike, but harmful debris can cascade down with the water.
  • Bring water. It's common sense, but bring drinking water along with you. The water in the pool is not safe to drink.
  • Bring a camera. Manoa Falls is a great place for a family photo.
  • Be safe. Don't leave anything of value in your car, locked or not.
  • Bring a snack. You'll be hungry by the end of the hike, but make sure that whatever you take in, you bring back out with you. Help to keep this spot beautiful and rubbish free.
  • Go when it's dry. Do not hike this trail in the rain, as flash floods are a real possibility.
