Dole Pineapple Plantation Description

The Dole Pineapple Plantation boasts the world's largest maze, which covers three acres and is shaped like a -- wait for it -- pineapple. Made up of an assortment of tropical plants, it's fun for kids of all ages. Older kids especially enjoy the challenge of finding each checkpoint hidden within the twists and turns of this living labyrinth. A company train, the Pineapple Express, takes visitors on a 20-minute ride that offers a closer look at the history of the plantation. Inside, there's plenty of souvenir shopping with a wide variety of Hawaiian- and pineapple-themed products.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Younger kids love the narrated Pineapple Express ride that takes visitors through a working plantation.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Complete the maze in top time, and win a prize. Think you can do it? The average time to complete the maze is about an hour, while the fastest time recorded is less than a quarter of that.

Planning Notes

  • Comfortable shoes are a must. You'll cover some ground as you traverse the maze. Be aware that if it's been rainy, the maze may be a bit muddy and slippery.
  • Bring coins. There are a couple of "smashed penny" machines inside for an inexpensive souvenir.
  • Prepare for the sun. The train is partially covered, but you'll want hats and sunscreen when you're walking through the maze.
  • Save room for dessert. Snacks abound at the Plantation, but the Dole Whip is a must-try treat. This pineapple-flavored, sorbet-style dessert comes in a cup or a cone, topped with chunks of juicy pineapple.
  • Look for coupons. Make sure to check coupon books (available at hotels and stores throughout Honolulu) for discounts.
