Bishop Museum Description
Visitors to the Bishop Museum's Science Adventure Center descend through a glow-in-the-dark tunnel to the inner workings of a volcano, where they learn about lava and the formation of the Hawaiian Islands. "Meet me at the Hot Spot" will leave kids spellbound as they watch red hot lava flow, cool, and crack. Head to higher ground to get up close with local creatures, generate some ocean waves, and see a model of a bubbling volcano. Across the lawn at the Hawaiian and Polynesian Halls you can discover the history of the Hawaiian monarchy and view towering "kahili" (feather standards) once used by Hawaiian royalty.

Toddlers & Pre-K: There's plenty of lawn space for tots to burn off pent-up energy.
School-Age Kids: The Science Adventure Center offers interactive fun for curious young minds.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The Planetarium features a movie in the round several times a day, along with a look at the night skies of Hawaii.
Planning Notes
- Bring a car. Parking is free and plentiful, a rarity in Honolulu.
- Shop for souvenirs. The gift shop at the Bishop Museum is impressive, featuring Hawaiian books, music, and handicrafts.
- Divide and conquer. There is much to see at the Bishop Museum, but younger kids will probably find the Hawaiian and Polynesian Halls a bit dull. Instead, make sure they have the opportunity to explore the hands-on Science Adventure Center or view the live hula and music presentation that happens twice daily on the Great Lawn Stage.
- Check the website. Traveling exhibits come and go.
- Are you serving? Ask for the discounted rate available to military visitors.
- Look for coupons. Make sure to check coupon books (available at hotels and stores throughout Honolulu) for discounts.
