Hana Highway Description

The Hana Highway is a 53-mile drive with waterfalls, beaches, a multitude of one-lane bridges, hiking trails, tropical rainforests, and spectacular ocean views. Plan to stop often to take photos, picnic, or jump in a mountain stream pool like Oheo Gulch (Seven Pools), with pools hewn from solid rock. Although 53 miles doesn't sound like much, it can take as long as three and a half hours to drive one way, so consider staying overnight in Hana.

Kid Tips

Babies: Babies should do well with a long car ride and will probably sleep through a good bit of it.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Bring toys or games appropriate for the car, and plan to stop often.

School-Age Kids: They'll love jumping in the mountain pools and finding fun picnic spots.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Swimming in waterfalls and sacred pools will appeal to the dramatically inclined.

Planning Notes

  • Daytrippers need an early start. Or if you're willing to stay overnight, check out the Hotel Hana Maui, only 9 miles from the Oheo Gulch.
  • Car-sick travelers beware. The Hana Highway is famous for its 600 twists and turns.
  • Bring a picnic, snacks, and bottled water. Food service is scarce.
  • Bring tissues. Rest areas occasionally run out of toilet paper.
  • Fill the tank before you go. Gas stations are scarce.
  • Bring swimwear, towels, and a change of clothes. Even if you're not planning to swim, those stream-fed pools can be irresistible to kids.

Loved this trip the scenery was amazing

What we loved:
Waterfalls, Pools, Black Sand Beach...

What we didn't love:
Drive was tedious and scarey at times

My husband and I took this trip on our honeymoon -- but we did it by guided tour. To this day we always say that was probably the best way to go. We saw so much and we were not stressed out about the driving. The way back would have been horrible after a long day sight seeing. We even got to stop at the Maui Winery which was very nice and a great place for unique souvenirs! We stopped quite a few times with the bus tour: Waterfalls, Black Sand Beach, RainForest, Hana Florist, Maui Winery were the highlights for me. I cant imagine taking a baby on this drive, I would definitely wait till my son was at least 5 before I would consider it. Read More

What we loved:
Fantastic scenery waterfalls

What we didn't love:
Road is very narrow

We were expecting to see some gorgeous scenery, and we definitely got it! Seeing the rainforest and waterfalls was amazing. BUT I have to say that this drive can be scary if youre not used to driving on mountain roads or at high altitudes. Much of the time, youre driving alongside a very high cliff with no guard rails. This "highway" is really a tiny, super-windy mountain road that can seem to go on forever it took us a few hours, but it was also raining when we went. Honestly, I think this was the most exhilarating part of our Maui trip but also a little scary, so I dont know if Id recommend going with small children. The distraction of having little kids along with you might add to the stress. And - there are no shops, stores, etc to stop at if you need something. This is a road that literally goes through a dense rainforest, so while you can pull over, you cannot get off until youve traveled the entire length to the other side. But that said, it is so worth it. I dont think Ive seen anything like it. Read More
