Steelgrass Chocolate Farm Tour Description

A family farm on the island since the 1860s, this eight-acre organic farm raises timber bamboo, vanilla, and chocolate, and offers a family-friendly tour called "From Branch to Bar." Make frequent stops to taste fruit in season (from soursop, a strange-looking spikey fruit that tastes like pineapple, coconut, strawberry and lime, to chiku, the sap of which used to be used in gum), past honey bee hives, and onto the chocolate orchard where you see live trees bearing fruit. Then sit in an open-sided tent to learn about the history and health benefits of chocolate, and sample 11 different chocolate bars. There's a separate tent full of toys and fun activities to keep younger kids occupied.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: This tour has little ones covered. Not only is there a separate kid tent with toys, bamboo puzzles, and drawing stuff available but if kids get squirmy while adults learn about the antioxidants in chocolate a guide will take them to a nearby stream so they can see crayfish, bullfrogs, tadpoles, geckos, and non-aquatic toads.

School-Age Kids: Children under 12 go on the tour for free and kids will be interested in learning the biology, horticulture, and sustainability discussed throughout the tour.

Planning Notes

  • Reserve two or three days in advance. To be guaranteed a space on the tour.
  • No drop-in visitors. Driving directions will be sent to you as soon as you have registered but the farm has too small a staff to accommodate drop-ins.
  • A perfect rainy day activity. Tours leave in rain or shine. Distributed umbrellas, paved walkways, and a covered tent keep you dry.
